Moving house checklist

Moving house is not one job. It is a stack of deadlines, address changes, packing decisions, building rules, and small move-day details that are easy to miss when the boxes take over. This checklist keeps the admin and the physical move together, so the boring tasks with consequences do not get buried under tape and bubble wrap.

The checklist

22 items grouped the way they will appear in the editor. No dates, because a checklist is about getting through the work.

Deadlines

  • Give landlord or agent notice Check the notice period in the contract before booking movers.
  • Book removals company or van hire Confirm stairs, lifts, parking, and whether packing materials are included.
  • Redirect post Set it up before the move; bank cards and official letters often arrive late.
  • Transfer electricity, gas, and water Ask how they want final meter readings and where to send the last bill.
  • Set up internet at the new address Installation slots disappear quickly, especially for flats and new builds.
  • Update council tax or local authority Tell both the old and new area if you are moving between councils.

Address changes

  • Change address with banks and credit cards Do this before ordering replacement cards or changing phone contracts.
  • Change address on insurance policies Home, car, pet, travel, and life policies can all depend on the address.
  • Update driving licence and vehicle registration Some places fine you for leaving this until later.
  • Tell employer, school, nursery, GP, and dentist These are the places that still send important paper letters.

Packing

  • Buy boxes, tape, markers, and labels Use more small boxes than you think; large boxes become too heavy fast.
  • Declutter donations and bulky waste Charity collections and council pickups usually need booking in advance.
  • Pack non-essential rooms first Books, spare bedding, decorations, and out-of-season clothes can go early.
  • Label boxes by room and first-open priority Write on two sides so the label is visible when boxes are stacked.
  • Pack valuables and documents separately Keep passports, contracts, jewellery, and hard drives with you, not on the van.
  • Pack an overnight bag Clothes, chargers, medication, toiletries, and anything needed before boxes are opened.

Move logistics

  • Book lift, loading bay, or parking permit Most apartment buildings require this and may refuse movers without it.
  • Arrange keys, fobs, and access codes Check how many sets exist and who is handing them over.
  • Take final meter readings and photos Photograph meters, empty rooms, and any existing damage before handing over keys.

Move day

  • Set aside cash for tips, taxis, or emergencies Card machines and phone batteries are not what you want to rely on mid-move.
  • Keep snacks, water, bin bags, and cleaning wipes out Pack them last or they will vanish exactly when everyone is tired.

First night

  • Make the bed and unpack towels first Future-you will not want to find sheets after a full moving day.

What to put on it

  • Deadline-driven admin like landlord notice, removals, post redirection, utilities, internet, and local authority updates.
  • Address changes for the places that still send important paper letters or use your address to price cover.
  • Packing tasks that keep the move practical: labels, valuables, documents, and an overnight bag.
  • Building logistics for lifts, parking, loading bays, keys, fobs, and access codes.
  • Move-day items that are easy to pack too early, like cash, snacks, water, bin bags, and cleaning wipes.
  • A first-night line for bedding and towels, because the first useful box is not always the first one off the van.

Questions

What should be on a moving house checklist?
Put the deadline tasks first: notice, movers, post redirection, utilities, internet, and local authority updates. Then add address changes, packing, access arrangements, meter readings, keys, cleaning, and a first-night box. The goal is to keep admin and packing in the same place.
When should I start a moving checklist?
Start as soon as the move is likely, even if the date is not fixed. Some tasks have lead times, especially removals, parking permits, lift bookings, internet installation, and bulky waste collection. Add the date later if it changes; do not wait to capture the work.
How do I make moving day less chaotic?
Label boxes by destination room, keep valuables and documents with you, and pack one overnight bag that does not go on the van. Take photos of meters and empty rooms before you leave, and make the bed before opening low-priority boxes.
